Business continuity – when things go seriously wrong

Business Continuity Management (BCM) is defined as a holistic management process that identifies potential threats to an organization and the impacts to business operations those threats, if realized, might cause, and which provides a framework for building bus-cont_suborganizational resilience with the capability of an effective response that safeguards the interests of its key stakeholders, reputation, brand and value-creating activities (BCI publication website).

while conforming to ISO 22301 requires a multi-phase process, the main problem in our view is the ability to establish which threats can disrupt the organizations ability to continue doing business and conduct operations. Many organizations continue preparing themselves for “yesterdays war” instead of examining new threats that are just around the corner and are therefore surprised again and again when these occur.

One of the most effective methods of examining your organization’s preparedness to deal with future threats is to carry out a war-gaming process involving many aspects of the organization. this will enable the organization to see how decisions are made in the organization and how they effect the organizations capability to continue operations under duress.

War Gaming is an integral part of examining the business’s capability to conduct operations when thing go seriously wrong!!
